John 2:11
"This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him."
The unfolding of his glory . . . can you imagine it? The King of Kings and Lord of Lords--He, who fashioned the stars and names each one, is a wedding guest revealing his glory to all of humanity. Did the winds change direction? Did he smile as he told the servants to draw out some water? What did Mary's face look like? Can. You. Even?
Do you glimpse the humility in this beautiful portrait of God's redemption for us?
Jesus reveals his glory to commoners--not kings nor nobles. And best of all, he invites the servants to be a part of it. Quietly, Messiah's first public miracle is performed and few even know. I love the way the NLT translates verse nine, "When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew)..."
Of course they knew. They experienced Jesus.
As we draw near him this morning, let us experience him. Let's read through the wedding passage again as one of the servants. Can you relate to what they might have thought or felt? How have you experienced Jesus lately? What jumps out at you?
This is so true to form of Jesus- revealing himself to the servants and not the kings or noblemen- I LOVE this! I can only imagine the talk among the servants the next day! To have experienced it and "be in on it" how amazingly cool! I also wonder how many of the guests maybe did catch a glimpse of what was going on but were too wrapped up in their own things to notice? I think we all can be servants- we just have to stop and be still, listen and obey. Then we can experience the miracles!
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing, Andi! I also wondered what it was about being in Jesus's presence (besides the fact that Mary told them "do what he tells you") that they were experiencing that made them willing to take action that must have made no sense to them, maybe even seemed a bit crazy?? That "fully God-ness" of Him that had them jumping in and being a part of the bigger picture of what Jesus was doing and communicating. I thought about those times that the Lord leads me to say that something to someone or do that something that may make no sense to me at a the time but when I do it, I get to be a part of the bigger picture of what Jesus is doing in someone's life and to experience the blessings of being a part of His work.
ReplyDeleteYes! Andi and Lori, such good comments! I agree! The first time I read it, I just got so weepy and lovey-dovey over Jesus letting the SERVANTS be the ones. It's just "SO" him! He's so precious with doing Kingdom things in such an "upside down" kind of way! When I read it again, I wondered what the servants were thinking!? What made them obey? And how can I have their 180-gallon faith!?!
